The AJE is pleased to announce its annual call for members to apply for small research grants to support research projects.
The grants are designed to assist AJE members* develop a research project for publication and applications from those new to HE or early career researchers are particularly welcome.
The terms of the grant are that it should be used by an AJE member (or up to four members working as a team) to cover research costs such as data processing, purchasing data or translations of data in pursuit of a research project etc.
The research project must fulfil at least one of the objects of the AJE constitution, which are:
1) to uphold the highest standards in the teaching of journalism in higher education (this would include advancing knowledge and understanding of journalism issues to inform what we teach);
(2) to provide a common voice for the teaching of journalism in higher education;
(3) to monitor accreditation schemes;
(4) to discuss educational and curriculum development;
(5) to collect and share information on the teaching of journalism in higher education;
The closing date for applications is May 31, 2022. The successful applicants will be informed by the end of September 2022.
Successful applicants must supply a summary report of resulting analysis, findings and/or data in writing to the AJE Committee by March 31, 2023 and must subsequently be prepared to report, in person, on their research to the AJE’s Annual Conference in June 2024. Any initial research publication should be offered in the first instance to the AJE Journal: Journalism Education.
Applicants should send an outline of the project on the accompanying pro forma. This should include the aims of the project, the intended outcomes, an outline of research methods to be used and the timescale required as well as details of the proposed expenditure explaining how the money will be used.
Normal research funding practice requires that the money is paid into a research fund at your university, and this would certainly be required if you are seeking to use the money to buy out teaching time or to employ a research assistant or translator as your institution will need to arrange employment. However, it might be possible to pay travel fares directly if this offers needed flexibility. Either way, you will need to consider this fully in your application.

**Successful applicants failing to comply with the above regulations will be required to repay the grant in full.
