Watch our AJE UK autumn event: Prof. Mark Deuze on Wellbeing & Creative Careers

We held a special AJE event in November 2026 – Prof Mark Deuze, Professor of Media Studies, University of Amsterdam, joined us to talk about his new book (Wellbeing and Creative Careers: what makes you happy can also make you sick) and share with us his research into the exhilaration and exhaustion of careers in media and creative fields – and, by extension, for those of us teaching in these fields.

How much do you love teaching journalism? Being a journalist? Inspiring your students who plan to follow in your footsteps into the news media? Chances are most of you would use words like love, passion, enthusiasm.

You might also acknowledge that it is a precarious existence (in journalism and journalism education), exhausting, stressful.

We all know journalism education, journalism and the HE sector can be wonderful places to be, but we also know they can be tough places to be sometimes, especially at the moment.

If you can identify with any of this, then you may want to recap on Prof. Deuze’s talk – the first AJE event of the 2025-2026 academic year.

As well as acknowledging the challenges in these fields, Mark also provided us with some advice and guidance on how we find balance in challenged workspaces such as these. It was a fascinating and helpful session and you can catch up on the video below (click or tap on the image to be taken to the video in a new window):
