Applications for 2017 AJE research bursaries now open

The AJE is pleased to offer up to three research grants of at least £1,500 to its members.

The grants are designed to assist AJE members* develop a research project for publication and applications from those new to HE or early career researchers are particularly welcome.

The terms of the grant are that it should be used by an AJE member (or up to four members working as a team) to cover the cost of travel, accommodation and other research costs such as data processing, purchasing data or translations of data in pursuit of a research project.

The grant could even be used to buy out teaching time.

The research project must fulfil at least one of the objects of the AJE constitution, which are:

  • to uphold the highest standards in the teaching of journalism in higher education (this would include advancing knowledge and understanding of journalism issues to inform what we teach);
  • to provide a common voice for the teaching of journalism in higher education;
  • to monitor accreditation schemes;
  • to discuss educational and curriculum development;
  • to collect and share information on the teaching of journalism in higher education;

The closing date for applications is May 31, 2017. The successful applicants will be informed by the end of June 2017.

Successful applicants must supply a summary report of resulting analysis, findings and/or data in writing to the AJE Committee by March 2019 and must subsequently be prepared to report, in person, on their research to the AJE’s Annual General Meeting in June 2019**.

Any initial research publication should be offered in the first instance to the AJE Journal: Journalism Education.

Applicants should send an outline of the project on the accompanying pro forma: AJE BURSARY APPLICATION FORM – 2017

This should include the aims of the project, the intended outcomes, an outline of research methods to be used and the timescale required as well as details of the proposed expenditure explaining how the money will be used.

Normal research funding practice requires that the money is paid into a research fund at your university, and this would certainly be required if you are seeking to use the money to buy out teaching time or to employ a research assistant or translator as your institution will need to arrange employment.

However, it might be possible to pay travel fares directly if this offers needed flexibility. Either way, you will need to consider this in your application.

* Only universities who are fully subscribed members of the AJE will be eligible to be awarded the bursary.

**Successful applicants failing to comply with the above regulations will be required to repay the grant in full.
