Seminar hears how female MPs get raw deal

The AJE seminar on sexism in the media heard that women politicians are experiencing more negative coverage than in the past.

Research presented by Deirdre O’Neill of Huddersfield University found that Labour female MPs in particular were getting a raw deal from Tory-supporting national newspapers. Lib Dem women were practically invisible in all samples.

O’Neill said: “Politics is highly mediatized and a a lack of coverage is a form of political death.”

The research was partly funded with a grant from the AJE.
