The AJE is delighted to announce that Mark Deuze of the University of Amsterdam will be keynote speaker at the June Conference in London. [Image: Wikimedia Commons] Dr Deuze is professor of Media Studies, specialising in journalism, at the University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Faculty of Humanities. The conference theme will be training versus education and Dr. Deuze has researched the employment position and work experiences of journalists. His biog states: In the Netherlands too, profound changes have been occurring in this field in recent years. Deuze plans to analyse the field of work of journalists practising their profession outside the context of an editorial team or permanent employment. This field includes freelancers, self-employed persons with no staff and a wide range of other business structures, such as formal and informal editorial collectives, as well as correspondents. Call for papers – training versus education

The AJE Summer Conference will take place on June 23 and 24 at the London Campus of Newcastle University based in the City. The theme of the conference will be Training v Education and we are calling for papers and presentations around the theme which will cover such topics as: Curriculum choices: Pressures from the university, pressure from the industry, pressure from accreditors. The future for students: providing a balance between education and training. The future for journalism: our part in developing the talent of tomorrow. The future for journalism educators and trainers: What will both industry and the academy expect of us. Accreditation: should we, can we, do we want to? This list is not exhaustive and we will consider any paper on the general theme.
